The Digital Marketing Checklist for a New Nigerian Business in 2026

Starting a new business in Nigeria in 2026 means entering a digital market where your potential customers are scrolling through five competing offers before breakfast.

The good news is that a well-set-up digital presence can put a brand-new business on an equal footing with competitors who have been around for years. The bad news is that without the right foundations, even the best-funded advertising campaign will underperform.

Here is the checklist every new Nigerian business should complete before spending money on ads.

WhatsApp Business Account

This is the first thing to set up. WhatsApp Business is free, takes 20 minutes to configure, and is the primary channel through which Nigerian consumers prefer to communicate with businesses.

Set up a professional business profile with your name, category, address, and business hours. Write a greeting message that goes out automatically when someone messages you for the first time. Set up away messages for outside business hours. Add your product or service catalogue. These small steps make every subsequent interaction more professional and more efficient.

Instagram Business Account

A completed, professional Instagram page is non-negotiable for Nigerian SMEs in 2026. Write a bio that clearly states what you do and who you serve. Add your WhatsApp link. Create highlight covers for your key categories: products, testimonials, how to order, and about the business.

Post at least 12 pieces of quality content before you run any ads. A potential customer who clicks your ad and lands on an empty page will not convert.

Google Business Profile

Many Nigerian businesses overlook this completely. A Google Business Profile is free and ensures your business appears when someone searches for your product or service category in your city. Add your address, phone number, WhatsApp link, photos, and business hours. Encourage your first customers to leave Google reviews.

This is especially important for businesses with a physical location or those serving a specific geographic area within Nigeria.

A Dedicated Landing Page

Before you run any paid advertising, build a landing page for each offer. Not your Instagram page. Not your homepage. A single page built around one specific offer with a clear headline, proof, and one call to action.

A landing page does not need to be expensive or complicated. There are tools that allow you to build one without coding. What it needs to be is fast, mobile-friendly, and specifically designed to continue the message your ad started.

Meta Pixel

Install the Meta pixel on your landing page before you run a single ad. This small piece of code tracks every visitor to your page and allows you to build retargeting audiences from day one. Every day you run without it, you are losing data you can never recover.

A Basic Content Plan

Decide before you launch what you will post, how often, and on which platforms. A simple plan of four to five posts per week across your key content pillars is far more valuable than an ambitious plan you cannot sustain.

Consistency matters more than frequency. A page that posts four times a week every week will outperform a page that posts twenty times one week and then goes silent for a month.

With these foundations in place, your first naira of advertising spend has the best possible chance of generating a return.
